ACC Drama to Host Virtual Performance of Antigone

The Alvin Community College Drama Department will deliver a virtual live performance of the classic Greek play Antigone.

The play will run on October 3, 4, and 8-10.

All performances will be done live through a virtual feed with Playscripts, Inc.

鈥淲e're very excited to be producing our very first virtual theatre production,鈥 said Dr. Jay Burton, ACC Drama chair. 鈥淭his presentation requires an entirely new approach: it is part live theatre because we are not cutting and splicing like a movie, and it's a little bit like television. It also has some aspects of film, so it's a challenge not only for the actors but for the production team as well. Along with the challenges is the reward of getting to participate in a whole new theatrical form.鈥

This production is based on David Rush鈥檚 adaptation of the Sophocles鈥 play about a Antigone, the daughter of the slain Oedipus, who dares to defy the order of King Creon (Antigone鈥檚 uncle) that Oedipus should not have proper funeral rites. Her defiance sparks a family feud that pits family members against each other and civil law against the gods.

鈥淔or a 4000-year-old play, it's remarkably relevant today,鈥 Burton said. 鈥淲e are hoping that everyone will log into BroadwayOnDemand.com to enjoy this modern classic."

Performances on October 3, 8-10 will be at 7 p.m. with a matinee on Sunday, October 4 at 2:30 p.m. All tickets are $6.99.
